Macbeth the Graphic Novel Details
From Booklist A clever twist on graphic adaptations of Shakespeare is the three-version, curriculum-friendly series from Classical Comics. Each book has identical art and back matter but features different text: the Original Text, with Shakespeare’s original in its entirety; the Plain Text, with a modern-English translation; and the Quick Text, which reads with the speed and pace of an action cartoon—or, more to the point, a CliffsNotes edition. Of the three, this Quick Text rendition of the Scottish play, with its warrior king and manipulative queen driven to ruin by guilt, best matches the solid but unsubtle art, straightforwardly interpreting the themes of the play through dialogue. Although this more accessible experience can serve to attract hesitant readers, they will unfortunately be losing much of the play’s power. The Quick Text is ideal, however, to be read beside the other two versions as a lesson in the multiple levels on which Shakespeare’s work can function. Includes extensive back matter on the play’s history and Shakespeare himself. Grades 6-10. --Jesse Karp Read more
